Alert Correlation and Deduplication: The Fastest 60% Noise Reduction You Can Ship

Enable correlation and deduplication before anything else. It requires no changes to your monitoring rules. Updated April 2026.

What Each Term Means

Deduplication

Identical alerts from the same source within a time window are collapsed into one. Example: the same host-down alert firing every 60 seconds for 10 minutes becomes one alert, not 10.

Correlation

Alerts from different sources that share a common root cause are grouped into one incident. Example: 30 service-level alerts caused by a single database failure become one grouped incident.

Grouping

Alerts that share attributes (service, environment, tag, topology) are grouped together for joint review. Broader than correlation; may group alerts without a confirmed common cause.

Suppression

Alerts that match a defined pattern (maintenance window, known issue) are withheld from paging entirely. The alert is recorded but does not interrupt the on-call engineer.

Flap detection

Alerts that oscillate rapidly between firing and recovering are suppressed until they stabilise. Prevents repeated pages for intermittent metrics like network packet loss.
